It was from the engine. JDM engines are notorious for having oil problems since they sit for so long out of the car. Oil pans get dented in transit, etc. Sounds like the shop didn't anticipate/fix those issues (most people replace the oil pan at the very least). JDM engines are a crapshoot. The timing has nothing to do with the turbos. They probably adjusted your base timing (which should have been checked before the car left the shop) - that could stop the detonation (the noise you heard). By the time, it was likely too late and the damage had been done to the engine. You need a new mechanic.. sorry dude. -jb
